The Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) has launched a project alongside the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF). The project, titled "FinWise Ethiopia: Last-mile Capital for Inclusive Growth," is an effort to strengthen Ethiopia's financial inclusion landscape by directly empowering its increasing fintech startup ecosystem.
This initiative is designed to accelerate financial access for all Ethiopians, particularly those in underserved communities. The core of the project is to provide comprehensive support to fintech startups that are developing innovative digital tools. Specifically, FinWise Ethiopia will back solutions that enhance Cash In/Cash Out (CICO) agent networks and other crucial Digital Financial Services (DFS). By enhancing these smart digital tools, the project aims to help more citizens move money securely, efficiently, and easily across the country, bridging the gap between urban and rural financial services.
The support offered through FinWise Ethiopia is holistic. Selected startups will benefit from a robust combination of training, acceleration programs, mentorship, seed funding, and essential market linkages within the ecosystem. This package is structured to help these businesses scale their operations, attract larger investments in the future, and ultimately drive inclusive economic growth. A core objective remains the empowerment of vulnerable groups, with a focused effort to improve access to finance and promote economic opportunities for women, youth, and rural communities.
The "FinWise Ethiopia" Project represents a strategic partnership that reinforces EDI's mission to empower local entrepreneurs and UNCDF's global mandate to unlock public and private finance for the Least Developed Countries. This collaboration is set to nurture a resilient and innovative business ecosystem, ensuring that the benefits of the digital economy reach the last mile across Ethiopia.
